Illustration, retouching and artwork for the rebranding of the iconic BBC show Dr Who. All images copyright of Littlehawk.
At the start of 2018, I was very fortunate to be asked by creative agency Littlehawk to work on their global rebranding of Dr Who, in time for Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the first female Doctor. Tasked with creating the stills content which helped steer the teaser animation launched at the BBC Worldwide Showcase event, it was a considerable amount of work which resulted in the key visual you see below.
Working with Showrunner Chris Chibnall and executive producer Matt Strevens, Littlehawk laid the foundations for the new global franchise brand. After an exhaustive brand audit, they set the strategic framework for the new franchise and created a new global brand that spanned all Doctor Who content and merchandise - past, present and future.
My work included generating the key visual to a size of 20,000 pixels wide in Photoshop. The illustration work involved in creating every effect from scratch was very intensive. From drawing crystalline shapes to constructing custom brushes for random lighting effects, the generation of bespoke displacement maps and comping together images to overlay and affect the layers below.
The response to the work has been very positive with over 135 million shares on Metro’s website alone, plus the countless other articles and video critiques from the media and the show’s global fanbase. Upon completion of the key visual, the next task was to produce multiple language versions and deliver usable assets to cover all digital and print purposes across the globe.
